Ear Clinic

Earwax is like a gentle, antibacterial, antifungal stream that begins inside your ear canal and flows to your outer ear. When you chew or talk, your jaw movement nudges your earwax along. Its ongoing journey cleanses your ears, mopping up dirt, hair and dead skin cells along the way. It also protects your ears from infection, injury and moisture.

Most of the time, you should leave your earwax alone and let it get on with its job. But sometimes earwax can become a problem when it builds up and blocks your ears.

You DO NOT remove impacted earwax by poking around inside your ear with a cotton bud, pencil, bobby pin or anything else. Doing so risks injuring your ear canal or even puncturing your eardrum. Many people who try to dig out their earwax worsen the problem by pushing it further into their ears

Once a week we provide an ear clinic service for patients. The clinic is run by a specially trained nurse, who by using the latest technology can safely and effectively remove excess wax and blockages in the ear canal under micro-suction.

The first step in the micro-suction process is to examine the ear canal using a light and converged microscope headset. The technology we use lets the nurse see with both eyes to the bottom of narrow cavities and delivers excellent depth perception. This allows the nurse get a clear view of the earwax and debris and frees up both their hands.

Once identified, a thin suction tube vacuums up any residues. The vacuum isn’t very loud but can seem loud because it’s happening right in your ear canal.

The nurse may need to pluck stubborn earwax or debris using small surgical instruments.

It’s over fairly quickly, and you can talk to the nurse during the procedure – we can stop and start as necessary to ensure you’re comfortable.

The entire micro suction procedure is usually quick and comfortable, and if your ears have had impacted wax build up; you can expect to see a dramatic improvement in your hearing immediately afterwards.

This method is accepted as the safest; most comfortable and effective technique when compared to traditional “wet” ear wax removal methods such as syringing and irrigation.

Within the clinic the nurse can provide checks; cleaning; treatment of infections and advice.

The standard cost for the ear clinic is $65 and $45 for follow up visits.
